One of the things men get shamed for - wrongly in my opinion - is our perceived lack of empathy. I see the same issue in women as well, so I tend to think of it more as a human problem, not a gender problem. All of us want to feel understood and feel cared about - the best way to get that is to give it.
However you see it, we are not encouraged in this culture to develop empathy, and if we are (usually within our families), the capitalist system we are embedded in selects against empathy in many ways, rewarding individualist goals and drives.
In this post from a while back, Rick Hanson talks about how to connect with others by tuning into their feelings. He sees empathy as a kind of mindfulness practice - I like that perspective.
